Love Island’s Demi Jones admits her regrets after announcing her cancer diagnosis online before telling her family.
The 22-year-old starfound out she had thyroid cancerafter getting a lumpremoved from her neckat the end of April.
However, in her shock at processing the information, she let out her feelings on social media before letting her nearest and dearest know.
Expressing her upset about doing it in retrospect, Demi told Zeze Millz: "When I first found out it could be cancerous, I was in shock and I was crying because I went on social media, and I shouldn’t have done that because I hadn’t even told my family yet.
"I don’t even know why, I can’t even tell you because my head was scrambled and I was like 'Oh my God, guys!'"
Demi is now undergoing further treatment to ensure any remaining cancer cells are removed, and has been keeping fans updated online.
Despite the diagnosis, she’s been keeping positive, and was praised forspending a night out with the scar across the base of her neckon display.
But she’s also been critical of her ability to not get it diagnosed sooner, after the coronavirus pandemic meant she had six medical appointments cancelled across seven months before she discovered what was wrong with her.
When she did get an ultrasound scan, she was initially told there was nothing wrong with her – but Demi pushed for more tests after a similar situation happened to her dad.
Explaining more about her exact diagnosis, papillary thyroid cancer, Demi said online: "I had a lump in my neck that was actually a tumour. I was living all these years with a tumour in my neck, which was scary.
"They removed that side of the thyroid, and now I need more surgery to move the rest of the thyroid, then go for some iodine cancer treatment and some hormone tablets to keep my hormones regulated."
She’s been supported by her Love Island co-stars, particularly bestie Shaughna Phillips, who was with her during her time in the South African villa at the beginning of 2020.
Finlay Tapp, who won the series with girlfriend Paige Turley, later told OK!:“She is being strong. Both Paige and I got in touch and sent her a bunch of flowers.
“It’s one of those where she’s that lovely and she’s got that much support behind her that she’ll get through it and she’ll be absolutely fine, we’re all sure of it.”
