Peaky Blinders fans have loved Cillian Murphy’s portrayal of Tommy Shelby in the hit gangster series since he first took on the role back in 2013. However, in a recent interview, the actor opened up about how he felt about his character in the series, and whether he even liked him or not.

Does Cillian Murphy actually like Tommy Shelby?

There’s no denying Tommy Shelby has done some pretty terrible things during his life – from being the leader of a criminal empire to killing men point blank.

However, fans have still found plenty redeemable features in the gang leader to love.

Although, some of you might be wondering what the actor who plays him really thinks of the character.

During an interview with BUILD ahead of season five of the show, Murphy opened up about his thoughts on Tommy.

When asked whether he needed to like Tommy in order to play him, the star revealed he doesn’t need to be on the same side as him.

He said: “I don’t necessarily need as Cillian to agree with any character I play.

“That would limit the amount of characters I could play drastically. But I need to understand and comprehend.”

He did go on to add how through the series, Tommy is becoming more and more likeable in his eyes.

Murphy added: “If you’ve watched the whole show, you’ll begin to realise that what’s happening gradually is you’re beginning to see more and more of the character that existed pre-First World War.

“Before he was so traumatised and devastated by his experiences in France, in the trenches.

“And we’re beginning to see some of those values and things that were important to him.

“They were dormant for a long time and now they’re coming back to life again.”

As fans of the show will know, it does seem like Tommy is on something of a redemptive path as the series continues.

This is something show creator Knight has previously spoken about, revealing how he wants to explore if Tommy can ever become a good man.

He told Digital Spy back in 2019 how this was his plan for Tommy as he gets closer to his seventh and final series.

Knight explained: “My intention always has been to redeem [Tommy] so that at the end he’s genuinely a good man doing good things.

“And finding how that journey happened, and why it happened, and dealing with all the post-traumatic stress of the First World War, and never easing up on that.

“It’s not like: ‘We did that in series three, so we can forget that now.’ That will stay with him all the way through.”

Viewers should expect to see more of this when Peaky Blinders returns with season six on the BBC.

Filming is currently delayed on the new outing but fans are hopeful it will air in later 2021 or early 2022.

Peaky Blinders seasons 1-5 are available to stream on Netflix now.
