Sunday night’s Strictly said goodbye to McFly’s Tom Fletcher after a tense dance-off with children’s presenter Rhys Stephenson. BBC Breakfast’s Dan Walker and his partner Nadiya Bychkova were safe from elimination after showing improvement with their impressive Charleston, and the newsreader said thank you to co-presenter Carol Kirkwood the following Monday morning.

Weather presenter Carol was in the Strictly audience on Saturday night to show support for her BBC co-star.

Dan paid tribute to his colleague with Sally Nugent the following Monday morning, and he could tell she was enjoying his performance.

“Carol Kirkwood was there,” he recalled. “Just before we started, I had a little glance over and I saw a huge grin right on the front row.”

As he showed his gratitude for her attendance, Dan and Sally watched over the clips of his Charleston on Saturday, which included some tricky lifts.

He said of Nadiya: “She was brilliant. This lift here, by the way, wait for it…”

“Get your bum over there, go on. Yeah, have some of that,” he commented as Nadiya flipped over his shoulder.

Returning to Carol, Dan revealed she had met his dance partner and immediately hit it off.

“Carol was so lovely,” he continued. “Nadiya had met her on Facetime last week when we spoke to Carol as people who have taken part in Strictly previously.”

“But they’re best mates now. They’re having a right old chin wag.”

Carol competed in the 13th series of Strictly, paired with professional dancer Pasha Kovalev.

She was eliminated after seven weeks, though Dan has managed to make it through to the tenth round of this year’s competition.

He and Nadiya scored an impressive 31 for their Charleston on Saturday, even managing a 9 from judge Shirley Ballas.

The pair have demonstrated a marked improvement over previous weeks, as this is the first time their score has reached the 30s.

However, they still have a long way to go if they’re to remain in the running up to the finale.

The BBC presenter also thanked Breakfast viewers for their continued support during another challenging Strictly week.

“It was a lovely night,” Dan added. “And thank you once again for all the amazing messages, wonderful support.”

Before Monday morning’s Breakfast show, Carol took to Twitter to pen some kind words for her co-star’s performance.

She wrote: “Just loved watching @mrdanwalker @NadiyaBychkova in the @bbcstrictly studio on Saturday!

“Dan is so nimble and light-footed! It was an absolute joy!!! #proud xxx”

Dan and Nadiya will take to the stage once again on Saturday, with their dance to be announced on Tuesday.

Strictly Come Dancing continues next Saturday on BBC One at 6.55pm, with the results show on Sunday at 7.20pm.
