Dune has become of the most sought-after franchises in the past 55 years. The 1965 Frank Herbert epic has inspired countless franchises, and has seen great success itself in the TV and film industry. The latest adaptation is coming from Warner Bros, and has been directed by visionary Canadian director Denis Villeneuve.
While the film was due to be released in December of this year, last month it was pushed back almost an entire year.
Dune is now due to be released October 1, 2021 – the date The Batman was originally supposed to be coming out on.
Although the delay saddened fans, it also stirred up some fear.
Considering Dune is a dense, heavy science-fiction novel, it could struggle to gain a large enough audience to make the desired profit.
However, the delay could in fact be a sign of confidence in the new franchise, as suggested by Comscore Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian.
Paul likened the new franchise to the Lord of the Rings series – a collection of films which famously cost hundreds of millions to make, and the better part of two years to film.
Villeneuve’s adaptation of Herbert’s epic story has already been split into two films, with the second half of the narrative yet to receive a release date.
Paul explained this is a huge jumping off point for a new franchise, and it needs to be executed correctly.
Paul told Observer: “This is a huge brand with a major filmmaker backed by a very filmmaker-centric studio.
“Moving release dates doesn’t show a lack of confidence in theatres. It’s the opposite. It shows that Warner Bros. has confidence both in the long game and in the property as it would rather wait for theatres to return.”
The actual budget of the first Dune movie is not know, but it is estimate to be above $200 million – meaning it has a large amount of cash to recover before it starts making profit.
Paul continued: “This is a movie with the global potential of $1 billion.”

Comparing the new franchise to that of an existing film series, Paul added: “I can see this becoming that kind of film with worldwide appeal in the vein of James Bond.”
Considering Bond has been one of the most popular film franchises in the past two decades, its comparison to Dune is a good sign.
Earlier this week the first reaction of the film from Frank Herbert’s son was revealed on Twitter.
Brian Herbert wrote: “Denis Villeneuve, the filmmakers and the cast have created a truly epic cinematic experience that is best viewed on the big screen.”
After teasing the film, he went on to comment on the film’s new release date.
He added: “The new release date will allow even more of our global audience to safely and comfortably enjoy the film in theatres as it was always intended.”
Dune had sold over 12 million copies by 1990, and was translated into over 14 languages.
Dune is due for release on October 1, 2021.
