Laurel Thomas (Charlotte Bellamy) has been struggling in the wake of the termination in Emmerdale.
She discovered she was pregnant back in November, and after learning the baby would’ve been born with Down’s syndrome, she and Jai Sharma (Chris Bisson) made a difficult decision to end the pregnancy.
In the wake of such a decision, Laurel has kept her feelings to herself, and struggled to open up about what she’s going through.
‘I think she’s feeling pretty numb about it,’ actress Charlotte Bellamy said. ‘She’s thinking about how she’s going to carry on and deal with it. As time goes on the pressures really start to land on her, and she’s not really dealing with it.’
What’s made matters worse is the fact that Laurel and Jai are both bottling up their feelings, and therefore they’ve got no idea about what one another are going through.
‘They’re not really communicating,’ said Charlotte. ‘They’re avoiding talking about, it’s too painful. They’re dealing with it separately, really, which is obviously really dangerous, as they’re on separate paths. ‘
‘Of course on her path, she doesn’t want to admit that she really wants to have a drink, because they’re both addicts, and she knows it’s the wrong thing to do, but she thinks it’s the only thing she can do to get through this.’
Laurel briefly consumed alcohol earlier this year, during Meena Jutla’s (Paige Sandhu) little get-together at Hawksford, and she’s been struggling to resist temptation ever since.
In fact, in episodes which air next week, she continues to fight the urge to drink, but ultimately succumbs to temptation.
‘She realises she has to go get a bottle of vodka,’ Charlotte continued. ‘She thinks: “I’ll just have it, but I won’t actually drink it”. But of course once it’s in the house, it’s just burning. She can’t forget it.
‘She wants to just numb everything, because it’s all just too raw and too painful and she’s not dealing with it, and this will be her only way of releasing that pain.’
Ultimately, Laurel has a drink. However, she soon finds herself having to explain her actions, after she’s caught red-handed by Nicola King (Nicola Wheeler).
‘Laurel does have a drink, and then Nicola unexpectedly comes to the house and basically catches her out. Of course, she’s drunk by then, so it’s impossible for her to hide that, and then it all just comes out. She basically tells her what’s happened.’
Jai later arrives home, and finds out what’s happened.
Charlotte said: ‘Jai’s suffering as well, but they’re both suffering not together but alone. They can’t really help each other. He’s frustrated that she had a drink and didn’t tell him. She wanted to deal with on her own as it was too painful for her to talk about.
‘It can drive couples apart, and I just don’t know what the future holds for them.’
