Idris Elba has shared his thoughts the coronavirus pandemic is the planet’s response to humanity’s ‘damage’, days after revealing he’s tested positive for the Covid-19 condition.
The Luther star revealed he’d contracted the virus, with his wife Sabrina confirming over the weekend she also tested positive.
Now, in a new interview, Idris has shared his belief the pandemic has stemmed as a direct effect of mankind’s damage to the planet.
In a video interview with Oprah Winfrey for her new show, he said it is ‘really obvious’ to him that the outbreak is the world crying out.
But in turn, he said it might force humans to think about the effect we’re having on the Earth.
He said: ‘One of the upsides of this whole drama is that we are forced to think together as a race.

Like millions of people all over the world, I've been staying safer at home for over a week now. I know a lot of people are feeling stressed, overwhelmed, and uncertain. Because of that, I wanted to offer some hope and gather thought leaders and people going through it to add some perspective. Which is why I FaceTimed Idris Elba and his wife Sabrina who are safely quarantined together after he tested positive for COVID-19. Idris fills me in on his journey and Sabrina reveals the result of her test after they decided to quarantine together. ‘Our world has been taking a kicking. We have damaged our world and it’s no surprise that our world is reacting to the human race.
‘It is no surprise that a virus has been created that is going to slow us down, and ultimately make us think differently about our world and ourselves.’
Idris continued: ‘For me, that’s a stand-out thing that is really obvious. This is almost like the world’s cry out.
‘Like, “Hey, hey, hey – you are kicking me and what you’re doing is not good, so we will get rid of you”.
‘As any organism would do, (the world) is trying to get rid of an infection, and maybe this is it for the world.’
The talk-show host agreed with Idris, as Oprah, speaking from her home as part of her new Apple TV+ series on the pandemic, Oprah Talks Covid-19, said the virus was here to ‘teach us’.
She said: ‘I think we all lose as human beings if we just think of this as a physical virus.
‘I think it is exactly as you said, that it is here to teach us, show us something about ourselves, as individuals and also as a world of people.
‘And this is the moment for our humanity to either rise or not.’
Idris was one of the first celebrities to publicly confirm they’d contracted Covid-19, with Tom Hanks earlier revealing his diagnosis alongside wife Rita Wilson.
Now Idris’s wife Sabrina has confirmed she too got the virus after refusing to quarantine herself from the actor.
She said: ‘I’m not surprised, as soon as I heard that Idris was potentially exposed. I was on my way anyway and I wanted to be with him, I think that’s an instinct as a wife you just want to go and take care.
‘We didn’t change the way we interacted, I could have made a decision to put myself in a separate room or maybe stay away and I’m sure people are making those decisions, they’re tough decisions to make. But I made the decision to want to be with him and still touch him.’
Sabrina revealed she also feels healthy, stating: ‘I don’t feel anything that would come to what people would now expect to be a symptom of coronavirus, which is really strange. It might change in the coming weeks, and we’ll keep everyone updated.’
