Jeremy Kyle, 54, was a top TV talent for 14 years on his eponymous talk show. But the star stepped away from the spotlight after the suicide of Steve Dymond, a guest who died several days after recording with the show. In the meantime, fellow ITV hosts Phillip and Holly Willoughby were poised to fill his slot with a bumper edition of This Morning. But today Jeremy’s manager Claire Powell announced he would return to air on a new, undisclosed TV show later this year. While Jeremy appears to be moving forward, footage of a light-hearted joke row between him and Phillip has emerged.
The clip from a 2015 episode of The Jeremy Kyle Show showed the presenter pair’s argument over Phillip being allowed on the host’s programme.
The Dancing on Ice frontman, now 57, was hoping to make an appearance to promote the charitable campaign ‘Text Santa’.
Donations would be made to Save The Children, the Make-A-Wish Foundation and Macmillan Cancer Support.
Clad in festive jumper with baubles, Christmas lights and tinsel, Phillip propositioned Jeremy, who wore his classic white shirt, black trousers and shoes.
After Phillip asked to appear on the show in a bid to raise funds, Jeremy angrily fired back.
He said: “I don’t want you on my show, you haven’t passed the criteria. Why are you here? What’s that jumper all about?”
Phillip responded: “Erm, it’s the jumper that needs to be on the telly… It’s for ‘Text Santa.’”
As tensions appeared to rise, Jeremy pointed to his chest and declared that it was his show – later he would also yell at someone for slamming a door.
He said: “Well why are you here? You’re on everything. It’s all about you, isn’t it?”
Phillip denied the claim, before he showed his fundraising bucket and Jeremy then tossed in change from his pocket.
The Dancing on Ice co-host said: “I’m allowed on everyone else’s show.”
Jeremy fired back: “Well you’re not allowed on this one.”
As the friction continued, Jeremy added: “I said you can’t! What are you going to do about it?”
The pair stood and appeared to square up, as Phillip reasoned: “I’m saying that’s a little unfair.”
Phillip and Jeremy’s faces got closer and they raised their voices, as they seemed to feign a fight.
Jeremy yelled: “It’s not gonna happen, ok? You’re not coming on.”
Seconds later, ‘Big Steve’ – a muscly, tattoo-covered security guard on the Jeremy Kyle Show – stood in between them both and grabbed Phillip by the forearms.
Walking around the bouncer and pointing at his foe, Jeremy said: “Deal with it, you’ll never get past him. If you get on my show I will be very angry.”
The host walked away, while Phillip stomped his feet and repeated “Let me at him” – in a style that mimicked cartoon character ‘Scrappy’ from the kids’ show ‘Scooby Doo’.
But that was not the last Jeremy would see of Phillip.
Viewers of the Jeremy Kyle Show would later spot the Phillip on a segment of the talk show entitled: ‘Explicit messages to another woman – is my boyfriend a cheat?’
As Jeremy walked towards the audience, a familiar face – still wearing the same Christmas jumper from before – handed him an envelope containing lie detector test results.
The host told Phillip: “Thank you very much indeed.”
The prank was all part of the #PipKnit campaign, where Phillip would appear on other ITV programmes to raise money and attention for the charitable cause.
In the ‘Where’s Wally’ style stunt, viewers were encouraged to tweet their sightings of the star to @ITVTextSanta along with the campaign hashtag.
