For a man that was once accused by police of dogging, Roy Cropper (David Neilson) lives a fairly quiet life in Coronation Street. He is more than happy with his online Scrabble, his trains and his bat spotting thank you very much.
Along came his unexpected niece Nina recently, who turned his world upside down. There was a frosty start to their relationship as Nina didn’t want Roy interfering with her dad’s life and care and when he died, she hid from Roy that she had since been left homeless.
On paper, goth teen Nina and humble café bookworm Roy have little in common – but they are about to bond over bats in an unexpected turn of events.
As Carla Connor (Alison King) tries to get Nina a social life and persuades the local youths to invite her along to a gig, she is stupefied when Nina responds that she would actually prefer to go bat watching with her uncle.
As Carla talks Roy into taking Nina along, the pair find themselves in a derelict building looking out for bats and it turns out they have more in common than they think. As they start to bond, a touching relationship develops as it’s clear that Roy is all Nina has left in the world.
With Roy taking her under his (bat) wing, can Nina start to settle on the Street?
One to watch: Friday 6 March at 8:30pm on ITV.
